EU Cookie Law - Achieving Compliance...
From 26th May 2012 UK law now says all UK businesses
with a website are legally required to obtain informed consent from website
user and/or subscribers in order to store information on their devices such
as a PC, laptop or smartphones etc...
You must tell people that the cookies are there (and there are many types of cookie), explain what the cookies are doing (usually in the form of a privacy policy), AND obtain their consent to store a cookie on their device (your website will need to be modified to do this)
- all BEFORE you place a cookie on a visitors device.
Over 90% of UK websites use cookies!
...with fines up to £500,000 for non-compliance, YOUR business needs to
take this seriously!
This updated privacy legislation now covers the use of
similar technologies such as HTML 5 storage AND local shared objects (LSOs), commonly called
"flash cookies".
So What Should I Do To Comply With The new
Law?
As a website owner you now have to:
#1) Undertake a comprehensive audit of cookies and related
technologies used on your website
#2) Publish the results of this audit on your website as part of your
‘Privacy Policy’
#3) Obtain a visitors consent to store a cookie
and/or related technologies on their device
You can manage these tasks yourself, or you can have an IT consultant
like myself do some/all of them for you.
